💨 Abstract

El Niño, initially forecasted as a routine climate event, has escalated into a major global weather story. By September 2026, there is a 90% chance of a "very strong" El Niño, which could lead to 451,000 deaths worldwide due to extreme heat, particularly in Nigeria, Indonesia, and Sudan. In the U.S., an additional 3,500 heat deaths are projected.
