💨 Abstract

With just eight days until the start of the 2026 academic year, the Gauteng Department of Education reports that 4,858 learners, or 1.5% of applicants, are still without school placements. The majority of these cases are in Ekurhuleni and Johannesburg due to rapid population growth. The department is working to resolve appeals and objections, with only 637 cases remaining.
