💨 Abstract
In South Africa, English, maths literacy, and life sciences are the most popular subjects chosen by high school learners for grade 12. Maths and physical science, considered essential for the country's socioeconomic development, are less popular, with only about one-third of learners opting for maths and 28% for physical science exams. Approximately one in five passes with the required marks for a science degree at university in both subjects.
