💨 Abstract
South Africa faces a significant health crisis if it delays the phase-out of coal plants. A report by Greenpeace and other climate groups warns that delaying decommissioning could result in up to 32,000 preventable deaths between 2026 and 2050. The delay will disproportionately affect Gauteng and children's health, leading to increased cases of asthma and preterm births. The economic cost is estimated at R721 billion.
