đź’¨ Abstract
Supermarkets in England frequently feature clock towers, which originate from a 1970s design guideline imposed by an Essex council. The guideline required buildings to have "specific Essex characteristics." Asda mimicked a 14th-century barn and Victorian clock tower from Coggeshall, leading to the spread of this design, known as the "Essex barn style."
