💨 Abstract
The West Nile virus, which can cause severe illness and is spread by mosquitoes, has been detected in UK mosquitoes for the first time. While the risk to the public is low, the discovery highlights the potential for vector-borne diseases to spread. The virus was found in mosquitoes near the River Idle in Nottinghamshire. Symptoms, if they appear, usually include flu-like conditions, but can escalate to neurological issues in severe cases.
