💨 Abstract

After a major U-turn, Chancellor Rachel Reeves has reinstated winter fuel payments for around nine million pensioners earning below £35,000. Initially, Reeves had axed the universal payment to save £1.5 billion, but the decision was reversed due to public outcry and poor electoral results. The about-face means the payment will be means-tested, saving around £450 million and costing £1.25 billion.
