💨 Abstract
Almost all of England's water companies are under criminal investigation for polluting rivers and seas with sewage. A record 81 probes have been launched, with Thames Water and Anglian Water facing the most investigations. Seven companies are already heading to court, and bosses could face up to five years in jail and hefty fines under new laws. The Environment Agency is increasing inspections and enforcement to ensure compliance. Only Welsh Water and Wessex Water are not under close scrutiny.
