💨 Abstract
Sri Lanka's Mattala Rakapaksa International Airport (MRIA), opened in 2013 with a capacity for 6 million passengers, now sees only 7 passengers per week, earning it the title of "world's quietest airport." The £161 million airport, built as part of a larger vision to develop Hambantota, faced setbacks due to low passenger demand. Its construction was also controversial as it disrupted an elephant corridor and bird migratory zone.
