💨 Abstract

An audit in Brazil revealed that slaughterhouses compliant with a 2009 settlement were far more likely to obey environmental laws prohibiting cattle from illegally deforested areas. Companies with independent auditors sourced only 4% of cattle from illegal clearings, compared to 52% for non-compliant companies. Despite improvements, gaps in oversight persist, with much of the Amazon's beef supply chain still linked to deforestation.
