💨 Abstract
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed legislation imposing stricter penalties for abandoning pets during natural disasters and for severe pet cruelty. Inspired by a bull terrier rescued from Hurricane Milton, the new law, effective Oct. 1, will punish violations with up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine. Additionally, a bill taking effect July 1 enhances penalties for severe animal abuse, motivated by an incident involving a decapitated dog in St. Petersburg.
