💨 Abstract

Scientists in Mexico City are using DNA sampling to track the endangered axolotl salamander, as their populations have drastically declined from 6,000 per square kilometer in 1998 to 36 in 2014. The team, led by Luis Zambrano, is analyzing water from Xochimilco's canals for environmental DNA, finding traces mainly in protected areas, which suggests conservation efforts are working.
