💨 Abstract
The Associated Press revealed that New Orleans honored the remains of 19 African Americans, returned from Germany, in a multifaith service and jazz funeral. These individuals, who died naturally in the 1870s, were subjected to racist research. Dillard University led the effort to repatriate the remains, emphasizing the importance of recognizing their humanity. The city plans to continue researching to identify possible descendants and honor the indigent individuals of that era.
