💨 Abstract

A high school senior in Bethesda, Alex Cox, launched the Books Behind Bars initiative after discovering that prisons struggle with library funding. Starting as an 8th grader, she organized a book drive that has since donated over 3,000 books to prisons in the D.C. region. Cox aims to partner with more schools and prisons, believing that incarcerated individuals deserve access to education and reading materials. She plans to study public policy and continue her advocacy work.
