💨 Abstract

Georgia's Supreme Court is considering a dispute between Black landowners and local officials in the Sapelo Island community of Hogg Hummock, one of the South's last Gullah-Geechee communities founded by freed slaves. Residents are trying to overturn zoning changes that could increase taxes and threaten the community's existence. They gathered over 2,300 signatures to force a referendum, but it was canceled before voting.
