đź’¨ Abstract

The California state Board of Environmental Safety rejected a proposal by the Department of Toxic Substances Control to weaken hazardous waste rules. The proposed change aimed to allow local landfills to accept toxic dirt, currently directed to specialized disposal sites. Environmental groups strongly opposed the proposal, citing concerns about exposing vulnerable communities to contaminated waste and setting a precedent for further regulation weakening. Approximately 47% of California's hazardous waste, including contaminated soil and waste oil, is trucked out of state.
