💨 Abstract
On May 16, 2025, Juan Francisco Mendez, a Guatemalan man living in Massachusetts, was released on a $1,500 bond after being detained by ICE agents in April. Mendez, who was applying for derivative asylum, was held for a month without deportation proceedings, leading to his case being dismissed. His lawyers condemned the detention as racially motivated and excessively violent. They noted outs fails to prove his status, he was detained.
