💨 Abstract

A bill allowing terminally ill New Yorkers to legally end their lives with prescribed medication passed the state Legislature. The proposal, now headed to Gov. Kathy Hochul for review, requires a patient to request the drugs, have approval from two physicians, and be expected to die within six months. Supporters argue it provides autonomy and ends suffering, while opponents oppose it on religious and ethical grounds. Eleven other states and Washington, D.C., have similar laws.
