💨 Abstract

Researchers on the ICECHIP project are chasing hailstorms across the Great Plains to improve forecasting models and understand hail damage, which costs the U.S. about $10 billion annually. The team, consisting of 60 researchers and AP journalists, uses fortified vehicles, drones, and special sensors to gather data within the storms. They encounter severe conditions, including high winds, heavy rain, and large hailstones, to better predict and mitigate hail's impact.
