💨 Abstract
Ten years ago, the U.S. Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage nationwide through the Obergefell v. Hodges decision. James Obergefell and his late partner John Arthur challenged Ohio's ban on same-sex marriage after their union was not recognized on Arthur's death certificate. The court consolidated several similar lawsuits across multiple states, ultimately ruling that marriage is a fundamental right protected by the Constitution.
