💨 Abstract
In South Sudan, artisans like Emmanuel Achuil are crafting durable and affordable footwear from discarded tires, driven by an economic crisis that has left many struggling. The crisis, exacerbated by dwindling oil revenues and political turmoil, has increased demand for these inexpensive, long-lasting shoes. Maker Emmanuel Achuil, who sells up to 20 pairs a week, finds a steady income in this work, even as many others face hardship.
