💨 Abstract
Federal judges in Alabama are evaluating a request to reapply the Voting Rights Act's preclearance requirement to the state, following court rulings that Alabama intentionally diluted Black voters' strength. Civil rights groups and Black voters seek this preclearance for future congressional plans. The Alabama attorney general and the Department of Justice oppose the request. The 2013 Supreme Court ruling had significantly weakened the preclearance provision.
