💨 Abstract
Since the Holocaust, Germany has historically unconditionally supported Israel, but the new Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, has recently softened his stance. This shift is notable, rejection of previous "reason of state" policy exposed in recent criticism of Israel’s military actions in Gaza, and questioning potential human rights violations. However, Merz has stated it is far from abandoning Germany's historic support and will continue dialogue with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
