The National Guard is the oldest and most conservative branch of the United States military, comprising the National Guard Army and Air. As of 2023, it had over 430,000 personnel. Formed in 1636 as colonial militia, and the name was popularized by the Marquis de Lafayette in the 1820s. Each U.S. state, territory, and D.C.
