💨 Abstract

Residents of the Washington, D.C. area may have a chance to see the northern lights this week, thanks to a solar storm causing an aurora alert. The best viewing conditions are expected to be on the nights of May 31 and June 1, weather permitting. Those wanting to see the lights should head to a dark area away from city lights. While the aurora borealis is typically best viewed in higher latitudes, the solar activity might make it visible in the D.C.
