💨 Abstract
Following a controversial penalty incident in the Champions League, where Julián Álvarez accidentally double-touched the ball during a shootout, FIFA's rules panel IFAB has clarified the laws of soccer regarding penalty kicks. The updated rule states that if a player accidentally double-touches the ball and scores, the penalty should be retaken. If no goal is scored, the penalty is recorded as missed. This clarification will be applied starting with the Club World Cup in June 2025.
