💨 Abstract
Billions of Brood XIV cicadas, emerging every 17 years, are surfacing across parts of the Eastern U.S. when soil temperatures reach 64°F (18°C). They emerge en masse, molt, and males produce a loud mating call. Cicadas serve as a protein source for wildlife and humans. The cycle ends with females laying eggs, and the process repeats.
