💨 Abstract

Cardinals from around the world began the conclave in the Vatican on May 7, 2025, to elect a successor to Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21. The 133 cardinals, representing the most geographically diverse conclave in history, entered the Sistine Chapel. Cellphones are surrendered and communications are jammed to maintain secrecy during the process for electing a new leader for the 1.4 billion-member church.
