💨 Abstract

This year, about half the world suffered at least an extra month of extreme heat due to climate change, causing illness, death, and damage to ecosystems. Extreme heat is often underreported but is the deadliest extreme weather event. Vulnerable populations are especially at risk. Heat waves are expected to worsen without phasing out fossil fuels, and aggressive measures like early warning systems and heat-resistant urban planning are needed.
