💨 Abstract

Iraq's prisons are overcrowded, holding twice their intended capacity, due to a general amnesty law. Justice Minister Khaled Shwani stated that Iraq's 31 prisons currently house approximately 65,000 inmates, designed to accommodate only half that number. The overcrowding has strained healthcare and human rights standards. Four new prisons are under construction, while three have been closed and six expanded.
