💨 Abstract

Former Uruguayan President José Mujica, known as "Pepe," died at 89 after a battle with esophagus cancer. Mujica, a former Marxist guerrilla and flower farmer, was admired globally for his radical brand of democracy and simple lifestyle. During his 2010-2015 presidency, he transformed Uruguay into a socially liberal democracy, legalizing marijuana and same-sex marriage, and making it a leader in alternative energy.
