💨 Abstract

Peru has reduced the protected area around the Nazca Lines by 42%, allowing illegal miners to apply for permits. The government says this move legalizes their activities, but environmentalists argue it will harm the fragile desert ecosystem and the archaeological site. The change covers 2,397 square kilometers, though it doesn't affect the 450 square kilometers containing the Nazca Lines themselves. UNESCO was not informed of this decision and seeks more information.
