💨 Abstract
singer Ciara has become one of the first public figures to obtain citizenship in Benin under a new law offering citizenship to descendants of slaves. The law, passed in September 2025, aims to acknowledge Benin's role in the transatlantic slave trade and attract the Black diaspora. Applicants must prove that an ancestor was deported via the slave trade from sub-Saharan Africa.
