Kurdish separatist fighters in Iraq begin laying down weapons as part of peace process with Turkey -
💨 Abstract
PKK fighters in Iraq began symbolic disarmament Friday, as part of a peace process announced earlier this year. The Kurdistan Workers’ Party, after four decades of conflict, pledged to disband. The process, initiated by leader Abdullah Öcalan, will be completed by September 2025. The PKK has long had bases in northern Iraq, facing Turkish offensives. The Iraqi government banned the group last year. Friday's ceremony had a small number of participants.
