💨 Abstract

A study published in the journal Environmental Pollution found that sharks in the Bahamas have ingested substances like cocaine, caffeine, and pharmaceuticals, known as contaminants of emerging concern (CECs). These substances were particularly prevalent in tourist areas. The study analyzed 85 sharks, including Caribbean reef, Atlantic nurse, and lemon sharks, and found varying levels of painkillers and stimulants. These contaminants can interfere with the sharks' ability to manage blood sugar and metabolize fats.
