💨 Abstract
New research has provided strong evidence that a shipwreck found in 2015 is the San José, a Spanish vessel sunk in 1708. It carried an estimated 200 tonnes of gold, silver, and gems, worth about £14.8 billion today. The ship was heading to support King Philip V during the War of the Spanish Succession. Advanced underwater imaging and coin analysis confirmed the wreck's identity.
