💨 Abstract

The number of people crossing the UK on small boats in 2025 has significantly increased, with nearly 20,000 crossing in the first half of the year due to various factors. Policies aimed at deterrence have largely failed. The weather and conditions in the Channel play a more significant role in migration patterns than these policies. Governments persist with these measures despite their ineffectiveness and the increased risk to migrants, a situation exacerbated by worsening conditions and rising deaths.
