💨 Abstract

A team from the University of South Florida discovered a bacterium in an Antarctic sea squirt that kills melanoma cells without harming normal human cells. Led by Professor Bill Baker, the team is studying this compound to potentially develop new melanoma treatments. The unique isolation of Antarctica has led to specialized organisms, making it a valuable natural laboratory. The expedition involved careful planning and diving to collect specimens, which will now be analyzed by multiple scientific teams to understand the compound's medical applications.
