Narayana Guru’s religious secularism—what makes the reformer-ascetic a puzzle for modern politicians
💨 Abstract
In 1888, Narayana Guru, an Ezhava considered an untouchable caste in 19th-century Travancore, defied convention by consecrating a shivalinga at Aruvippuram. He later consecrated over 60 temples, shaking up the society. His actions, interpreted as either emulating Brahmins or social protest, remain a political and ideological battle in Kerala.
