💨 Abstract
Google is in discussions with Italy's government to establish base stations in Sicily for a Mediterranean submarine fiber optic cable network. The aim is to expand infrastructure and improve internet connectivity. Google is already partnering with Telecom Italia's submarine cable unit, Sparkle, and is considering the potential acquisition of Sparkle, which the Italian government considers strategic due to the high volume of internet traffic that passes through submarine cables, including in the Mediterranean.
