💨 Abstract

A 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit off Taiwan's northeastern coast near Yilan late Saturday, shaking buildings in Taipei. The quake had a depth of 73 km. Taiwan, located near the junction of two tectonic plates, is prone to earthquakes. Previous significant quakes in 2016 and 1999 resulted in over 100 and 2,000 deaths, respectively. Damage assessment is ongoing.
