💨 Abstract
Eskom is mandating the installation of smart electricity meters nationwide by March 2027. These meters aim to improve access to Free Basic Electricity (FBE) and help manage load-shedding through remote load-reduction during peak hours. Households participating in load-reduction may receive incentives. However, the rollout faces challenges, including procurement issues and criticism over potential fraud and operational problems.
