💨 Abstract
In 2025, South African ID document applications will transition to digital and smart card-based systems, replacing the old green ID booklets. The Department of Home Affairs is streamlining the process to make it more accessible nationwide while maintaining security measures. First-time applicants can start the process online at the eHome portal and visit a DHA branch for biometric data capture. The smart ID cards are safer and less prone to identity theft.
