💨 Abstract

The article discusses the widening gap between SASSA grants and government salaries in South Africa. The 2026 Budget Speech announced a low 3.4% increase in social welfare grants, which is significantly lower than the inflation-adjusted salary increases for government employees. This disparity is concerning, as civil servants earn an average of R58,000 per month, while old-age pensioners receive only R28,800 per year.
