💨 Abstract

South Africa faces a critical road safety issue with at least one fatal truck crash occurring daily. The increasing shift of freight from rail to road has led to congestion and infrastructure strain, exacerbating the problem. Over five years, 2,237 fatal truck crashes involving over 3,000 trucks were recorded. Poor weather conditions and the size of trucks contribute to higher fatalities. The Department of Transport acknowledges the structural issue, noting a significant shift of freight to roads.
