💨 Abstract

Botswana has reinstated a ban on vegetable imports from South Africa, reversing previous steps towards reopening its borders. The Ministry of Lands and Agriculture announced the ban on December 8, 2025, prohibiting a wide range of fresh produce. This move, aimed at supporting domestic farmers, has been criticized by agricultural economists like Wandile Sihlobo, who argue that it undermines regional trade stability and creates uncertainty for South African farmers.
