💨 Abstract

South Africa's sports betting industry is booming, particularly among young adults aged 18 to 34, challenging the National Lottery's popularity. The industry is projected to reach R64 billion by 2025. However, concerns are rising about addiction and financial risks, as 63% of gamblers use essential funds for betting. In-person casino gambling has declined, while online sports betting has increased, highlighting shifting social norms.
