💨 Abstract
The Department of Social Development in South Africa is developing a Basic Income Support Policy for citizens aged 18-59. An initial draft, presented in late 2024, needs more consultations on affordability and linking beneficiaries to economic opportunities. An interdepartmental workshop in June 2025 will further this goal. Concurrently, the department seeks to extend the R370 Social Relief of Distress grant to protect beneficiaries from poverty during the policy’s development phase.
