Following a fatal taxi crash in Mbali Township on September 11 that killed five learners and injured 11, the South African Transport Department mandated a 48-hour investigation. Ministers Barbara Creecy and Mkhuleko Hlengwa vowed to prioritize scholar transport safety as part of the ongoing National Road Safety Strategy review. The taxi driver claimed brake failure caused the crash. The Department condemned rising road accidents involving learners.
