💨 Abstract

South Africa's Portfolio Committee on Correctional Services has raised alarm over the failure of current laws to reduce overcrowding in prisons. Legislation sections 49G and 62F aim to alleviate pressure by limiting remand detention times and using bail conditions, but have seen low success rates, especially in provinces like the Eastern Cape and Western Cape. Approximately 40% of sentenced offenders serve lengthy sentences, exacerbating overcrowding issues.
